Experience. Compassion. Knowledge.

I have been supporting pregnant and postpartum women for close to a decade. I am formally trained via Postpartum Support International, making me Perinatal Mental Health - Certified. I focused all of my 3 year graduate degree research on postpartum mental health and maternal mental health so that I could have a broader, more historic and international view of postpartum mood issues, including the variables that help and hinder.   Over the course of 9 months in 2020, I worked collaboratively with Access Midwives in Stoney Creek, Ontario, helping to trial the role of social work and counselling inside a midwifery clinic.  It was innovative and exciting. I gained more knowledge in perinatal mental health and developed screening processes and mental health treatment plans for patients.  It was a privilege to contribute to something so cutting edge in health care.  I'm very proud of the work we did there together (No, I did not get to attend any births unfortunately, but I did get to do home visits and snuggle fresh babes! Bonus!)

I say all of this because the reality is women who are experiencing challenges during the perinatal period want to know that their therapist knows their stuff and knows how to help! This is no joke to my clients - they have a baby now and they want to feel better.  There is a certain level of distress that can come during the perinatal phase as hormones, new worries, and stress levels can make us not feel ourselves, and clients want to know that we can help them as soon as possible.  Also mood disturbances such as depressive symptoms, rage, anxiousness, scary thoughts,  excessive crying, or sleeplessness can also catch us off guard and make us feel scared and uncertain about who we can share these details with.  If we are honest, it can often feel like a crisis! Qualified Perinatal Mental Health counsellors in the community, such as myself and many others, understand these challenges (and that scary thoughts are actually quite common!) and work with you so that you can receive shameless support in a safe and confidential space.  We want you feeling better just as much as you do, and we know how to get you there.
